WhatsApp is reportedly working on a feature that will let users share photos and videos in their original quality. The development comes a few days after the Meta-owned instant messaging app started rolling out a feature to send HD photos and videos.

As spotted by WABetaInfo, the platform that tests features before they are rolled out to the masses, the app will include an option to “select original quality photos or videos”. The update was rolled out in beta in WhatsApp for Android version 2.23.18.12.

According to the report, the app will treat the images and videos as documents. A screenshot shared by WABetaInfo suggests that there will be a new option to “choose from gallery” in the app’s document picker that mentions the ability to send original quality photos and videos.

The ability to send original quality photos and videos was first spotted in WhatsApp’s code in January.

WhatsApp HD videos, photos
Earlier this month, WhatsApp launched the ability to share HD photos and videos on the platform.

It must be noted that in this case as well, WhatsApp compresses the images before sending them. To be able to send original quality photos and videos is a welcome change.

Users can send an HD photo by choosing the “high quality” option which can be seen while sending an image. The photo sent in high quality will be HD so that the receiver knows that the photo is sent by using this feature. It is worth noting that this feature is limited to images shared within your conversations.

Similar to the HD photos feature, WhatsApp’s HD videos feature gives customers a choice to share high-definition videos. Previously, the high-definition videos were compressed to 480p due to the app’s resolution limit. Now, users can opt to send their video in HD (up to 720p).
