Starlink has officially launched in Zimbabwe, allowing users to order and access the service directly from the Starlink website. The service offers a range of monthly subscription plans starting at $50 for the Standard plan and $30 for the Mini plan in the personal and residential categories. Business plans range from $71 to $5,725 monthly.
Paratus, a Namibia-based company with operations in Zimbabwe, is listed as an authorised commercial reseller on the Starlink website. Additionally, local retailers Frampol and Dandemutande have announced they have also authorised Starlink resellers in Zimbabwe.
Starlink’s availability in Zimbabwe follows the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe’s (POTRAZ) approval of its licence in May 2024. Before this, Starlink was considered illegal in the country, and individuals found distributing or advertising the service faced legal repercussions. This included the arrest of a politician’s son, Neville Mutsvangwa, who was charged with illegally possessing a Starlink terminal just two weeks before the licence was granted.
Despite earlier challenges, Starlink has now officially launched its services in Zimbabwe after working closely with POTRAZ to secure the necessary regulatory permissions.
Starlink’s expansion into Africa is growing, with other countries like Botswana and Sierra Leone also granting licences and seeing the service rollout. Meanwhile, South Africa remains on hold and awaiting regulatory approval, though Elon Musk hinted the service could soon be available there.
