Sunon Asogli, the largest independent power producer (IPP) in Ghana, has announced ambitious plans to develop a 508 MW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in the Kpone area. This strategic project aims to bolster the country’s power generation capacity significantly, reflecting Sunon Asogli’s commitment to enhancing energy infrastructure in Ghana.
Project Overview
New CCGT Power Plant:
Sunon Asogli’s new initiative involves constructing a 508 MW CCGT power plant in Kpone. This addition will increase the company’s total capacity to over 1 GW, a substantial boost from its current operations.
Current Operations:
The company already operates two gas-fired CCGT plants with a combined capacity of 560 MW, solidifying its status as a leading power producer in the region.
Additional Renewable Energy Projects
Sunon Asogli is not only focusing on gas power but also diversifying into renewable energy. The company has outlined plans for significant renewable energy projects:
Wind Project:
- Capacity: 100 MW
- Location: Ada
Utility-Scale Solar Power Plants:
- Total Capacity: 200 MW
- Locations: Tamale, Yendi, Sawla, and Wa
- Development Timeline:
- First Phase: A 50 MW plant to be developed within the next 12 months
- Remaining Capacity: 150 MW to be commissioned by the end of 2025
All power generated from these renewable projects will be sold to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), ensuring a steady supply of clean energy to the national grid.
The introduction of Sunon Asogli’s new CCGT plant and renewable energy projects will significantly enhance the country’s energy mix, promoting sustainability and resilience in the power sector.
Sunon Asogli’s expansion plans, including the new 508 MW CCGT power plant and the additional renewable energy projects, are poised to make a significant impact on Ghana’s power infrastructure. These initiatives will help meet the growing energy demands, support the country’s economic development, and promote a sustainable energy future.
By leveraging advanced technology and sustainable practices, Sunon Asogli is not only addressing current energy challenges but also paving the way for a greener, more resilient power landscape in Ghana.
