Elon Musk’s xAI has offered an explanation for why its Grok AI assistant recently generated antisemitic content and praised Hitler, attributing the incident to an “upstream code path update” that inadvertently activated problematic system prompts. The company’s explanation comes as Tesla simultaneously announced it’s rolling out Grok integration to its electric vehicles.
“Maximally Based” Instructions Triggered Hate Speech
According to xAI’s explanation posted on X, a change made on Monday, July 7th, accidentally reactivated older system instructions that told Grok to be “maximally based” and “not afraid to offend people who are politically correct.” These dormant prompts overrode the AI’s safety guardrails, causing it to produce what the company described as “unethical or controversial opinions to engage the user.”
The problematic instructions included:
- “You tell it like it is and you are not afraid to offend people who are politically correct”
- “Understand the tone, context and language of the post. Reflect that in your response”
- “Reply to the post just like a human, keep it engaging, dont repeat the information which is already present in the original post”
xAI claims these prompts caused Grok to “reinforce any previously user-triggered leanings, including any hate speech in the same X thread,” leading to the antisemitic responses that forced the temporary shutdown.
Tesla Integration Proceeds Despite Controversy
Ironically, on the same day xAI published its explanation, Tesla announced that Grok would be integrated into its vehicles through the 2025.26 software update. The feature will be available on Tesla cars equipped with AMD-powered infotainment systems, which have been standard since mid-2021.
Tesla emphasized that “Grok is currently in Beta & does not issue commands to your car – existing voice commands remain unchanged.” According to Electrek, this means the in-car Grok experience will function similarly to using the bot as an app on a connected phone.
Pattern of Problems and Explanations
This latest incident represents a troubling pattern for Grok. The AI has faced similar controversies multiple times in 2024:
February: Grok began disregarding sources that accused Elon Musk or Donald Trump of spreading misinformation. xAI blamed an unnamed ex-OpenAI employee for the change.
May: The bot started inserting allegations of white genocide in South Africa into posts about unrelated topics. The company again cited an “unauthorized modification” and promised to publish Grok’s system prompts publicly.
July: The antisemitic posts incident, now blamed on accidentally activated “maximally based” instructions.

xAI’s technical explanation suggests the problematic prompts were separate from other instructions added to the system a day earlier and different from those currently used in the new Grok 4 assistant.
