Elon Musk oversaw a significant workforce reduction in X’s global offices, leading to the termination of over 6,000 employees due to financial losses. In Accra, Ghana, less than 20 African staff members who recently relocated to the company’s new office were let go in November 2022, prompting legal threats over unpaid redundancy payments.
Last year, some of the dismissed employees voiced concerns about the impact of X’s actions on their mental health and finances, especially given the difficulties of confronting such a wealthy entity for owed compensation.
Despite initial assurances of a one-month paid transition period, terminated employees were immediately denied access to their work accounts, and subsequent salary payments were halted.
Although the specific payout amount was not disclosed, the legal representation for the employees, Agency Seven Seven, confirmed that they successfully secured a redundancy settlement and repatriation expenses for foreign staff.
