Google has introduced a new font called “Ga Maamli,” inspired by the typography of the Ga community in Ghana. The font draws its influence from historic handwritten posters seen in the vibrant coastal areas of Accra, originally used to announce social events such as concerts, boxing matches, and parties.

“Ga Maamli” exudes a charm that pays homage to its vernacular origins while embracing modern typographic standards. The font’s unique variations and nuances reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Ga community.

The new font was designed by Afotey Clement Nii Odai, Ama Diaka, and David Abbey-Thompson. It is available online and open-licensed for use, making it accessible to a global audience.
