In an unusual show of unity, several leading French newspapers—including Le Monde, Le Figaro, and Le Parisien—have joined forces to file a lawsuit against X, formerly Twitter, over neighbouring rights. This legal challenge was announced in a joint statement sent to Reuters and the AFP.

Under European Union law, digital platforms are required to negotiate with media publishers to fairly compensate them for the use of their content. While Meta and Google have reached agreements with French publishers after extended negotiations, X has so far refused to engage in such discussions.

As a result, the Paris Court of Justice is now set to weigh in on the case, tasked with the complex job of determining the monetary value of news previews that X shares on its platform without paying the original publishers.
