Any potential deal is unlikely to be finalized until June, coinciding with Apple’s annual developer conference. Additionally, recent discussions between Apple and OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, suggest that Apple is exploring various AI models for integration.

Representatives from Apple, Alphabet-owned Google, and OpenAI have yet to respond to Reuters’ requests for comment on the matter.

The prospect of an agreement between Apple and Google could significantly extend the reach of Google’s AI services to over 2 billion active Apple devices, bolstering Google’s efforts to compete with OpenAI, which is supported by Microsoft.

However, such a collaboration may draw increased scrutiny from U.S. regulators, particularly given ongoing antitrust concerns. Google’s previous partnerships, including its default search engine status on Apple’s Safari browser, have faced legal challenges regarding anti-competitive behavior.

Meanwhile, Google has been actively promoting its genAI technology, including recent collaborations with Samsung for its Galaxy S24 smartphones, aiming to expand the adoption of Gemini after initial setbacks during its launch.

Apple CEO Tim Cook recently emphasized the company’s significant investments in generative AI, hinting at forthcoming developments later this year. While Apple plans to utilize its own AI models for certain features in the upcoming iOS 18, it appears to be seeking partnerships to leverage genAI capabilities for functions like image creation and text generation based on simple prompts, as per the Bloomberg report.
