Stephen Blewett, CEO of MTN Ghana, has been elected as the new Chairperson of the Governing Council of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications for the 2025/2026 fiscal year. He succeeds Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Telecel Ghana, who now serves as Vice-Chairperson.
The appointments were confirmed during the Chamber’s 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM), where members reviewed the sector’s performance and ongoing challenges. Blewett’s one-year tenure will focus on navigating Ghana’s telecommunications industry through rapid digital transformation, regulatory shifts, and sector-wide challenges such as infrastructure theft, fibre cable destruction, high taxation, and cybersecurity threats.
In his acceptance speech, Blewett emphasized the importance of collective action:
“The telecommunications sector is the backbone of Ghana’s digital economy, but the challenges we face demand collective ingenuity and partnership. We must bind together to surmount these obstacles and ensure sustained growth.”
As Chairperson, Blewett is expected to lead industry advocacy on key policy matters, strengthen public-private collaboration, and promote innovation in digital inclusion and cybersecurity. His leadership will also involve chairing bi-monthly Governing Council meetings, steering strategic initiatives, and representing the Chamber in national and international forums.
Patricia Obo-Nai, the new Vice-Chairperson, expressed confidence in the transition:
“It’s been a difficult time over the past couple of years due to several challenges, but we’ve stood strong. The times ahead require us to work collectively, and I’m confident Stephen’s vision will guide us forward.”
The AGM also approved the Chamber’s 2024 Financial Statement and authorized the Governing Council to determine auditor remuneration.
With Blewett at the helm, the Chamber is poised to drive initiatives that address infrastructure vulnerabilities, improve policy engagement, and support Ghana’s broader digital economy ambitions.
