Equinix, a global leader in digital infrastructure and the parent company of MainOne, has announced the appointment of Wole Abu as Managing Director for its West African operations. Abu will be stepping into the role previously held by Funke Opeke, the founder of MainOne, who continued to lead the company after its $320 million acquisition by Equinix in 2022.
As Managing Director, Abu will be responsible for overseeing Equinix’s operations in West Africa, building on the company’s foundation in the region to expand digital connectivity and growth. His role involves working closely with both local businesses and global companies to bring Equinix’s infrastructure capabilities to West Africa, supporting the region’s digital development.
Prior to joining Equinix, Abu was the CEO of Liquid Intelligent Technologies Nigeria and Africa Data Centres, with previous experience at Airtel and Pan African Towers. He expressed his enthusiasm for the new position, saying, “I’m excited to be joining Equinix, as we share a common vision for expanding digital infrastructure across Africa. This mission is crucial for bringing life-enhancing services to the region and bridging the digital divide. By empowering both enterprises and individuals, we’re enabling broader participation in the global digital economy.”
Abu’s appointment comes as Equinix recently opened a new data center in Johannesburg, emphasizing its commitment to advancing digital access across the African continent.
