Twitter is preparing to introduce a new feature that will allow users to engage in video and audio calls through Direct Messages (DMs).
A Twitter designer named Andrea Conway shared screenshots of the feature via her official Twitter account, expressing excitement with a “ring ring” tweet.
It is noted that the possibility of voice and video chat capabilities on Twitter was hinted at by the app’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Elon Musk back in May.
Mr Musk mentioned that “Users would be able to make calls to anyone on the platform using their handles, indicating that this functionality would be included in the latest version of the app.”
It’s also important to note that Facebook Messenger, owned by Mark Zuckerberg, already offers similar features hence posing competition to Twitter’s new apps.
“In the early years, the platform experienced modest growth, with around 20,000 tweets per day in the initial months and 60,000 tweets in 2007,” reports note. However, this pales in comparison to the impressive 100 million downloads that the Threads app received in two days.
Tension and competition for social media supremacy seem to have escalated following the launch of Threads, a new app by Meta.
Twitter has gone as far as threatening to sue Meta accusing the social media giant of hiring former employees to create a “copycat” application.
