India is in talks with countries in Africa, including Namibia and Rwanda, as well as South America to help them implement digital payment systems using its Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) aims to launch UPI in these regions by early 2027 through its international arm, NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL). NIPL CEO, Ritesh Shukla, confirmed ongoing discussions with several countries about the initiative.
Earlier this year, NIPL signed agreements with the central banks of Peru and Namibia to assist in building real-time payment systems modeled after UPI. These systems are expected to go live by late 2026 or early 2027.
Rwanda is among the countries where discussions have reached an advanced stage, though talks with other nations are still ongoing.
