Ghana is poised to embrace the global shift towards artificial intelligence (AI) by supporting initiatives that transform the work of entrepreneurs in the education and technology sectors. Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum emphasized this commitment during an interview with Joy Business following the launch of the EdTech Fellowship by MEST and the Mastercard Foundation.

Dr. Adutwum praised the private sector for its role in driving technological advancement, highlighting the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship as a significant step in this direction. The fellowship aims to provide mentorship and support from specialists in education innovation and sustainability, facilitating a transformative journey for its participants.

“This initiative is crucial for bridging the digital divide in Ghana by supporting small and medium enterprises in the education and technology sectors,” said Dr. Adutwum. He underscored the government’s role in complementing such initiatives with policies and infrastructure provisions. AI integration is a priority, with plans to incorporate it into most new infrastructures.

“We’re very grateful to the Mastercard Foundation and its partners for this initiative because technology is now the driver in everything. We cannot be left behind. The government fully supports this initiative and the public sector should explore opportunities to enable these innovations to be practiced and implemented. AI must be part of this progress,” he stated. He assured that facilities are being equipped to be “24/7 ready to meet modern needs.”

Suraj Shah, Head of Strategic Partnerships at the Mastercard Foundation, also highlighted the fellowship’s importance in creating jobs and enhancing the quality of education. The first cohort of the fellowship includes 12 companies, each offering innovative solutions poised to significantly impact the education sector.

This initiative marks a significant effort to integrate AI and advanced technology into Ghana’s education system, ensuring the country keeps pace with global advancements and supports the growth of local enterprises in the digital age.
