Google has launched AI Mode in Google Search across Africa, introducing a new way for users to interact with the web through artificial intelligence. The feature leverages a custom version of the company’s latest Gemini 2.5 model, designed to handle complex, multi-part queries and deliver a single, AI-powered response that better understands user intent.
Unlike traditional search, which requires users to refine their queries multiple times, AI Mode generates comprehensive answers in one go. It is available as a dedicated tab on the search results page and within the Google app on both Android and iOS.
One of the key innovations powering AI Mode is its “query fan-out” technique. This method breaks down user questions into subtopics, sends multiple queries to the web at once, and compiles the findings into a detailed, context-rich response.
The feature is also multimodal, allowing users to search using text, voice, or even images. For example, users can upload a photo, ask a question, and receive context-driven answers supported by links to relevant sources. Google emphasized that all responses are backed by its core quality and ranking systems, ensuring credibility while helping users easily access original content.
The company says AI Mode is especially valuable for exploratory tasks, such as planning a trip, comparing products, or learning about complex subjects. Google also noted that the rollout is part of its commitment to make AI tools more accessible and useful across Africa, while continuing to refine and improve the experience.
