Meta has unveiled two new monetization tools aimed at empowering eligible content creators in Kenya. These features include in-stream ads and Facebook ads on Reels, which can be placed before, during, or after content videos, whether prerecorded or live-streamed.
These tools will support video content in over 30 languages globally, including Swahili. Meta’s global partnership lead for Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey (AMET), Moon Baz, emphasized that this initiative will not only enable Kenyan creators to earn money but also raise the bar for creativity worldwide through Meta’s family of apps.
Access Requirements
To access these new features, content creators must comply with Facebook’s partner and content monetization policies, which include an 18+ age restriction. Specific requirements for in-stream ads include:
- Follower Count: At least 5,000 followers.
- Watch Minutes: A total of 60,000 watch minutes in the past two months.
- Content Type: Ads can be pre-roll, mid-roll, image ads, or post-roll and can appear in both prerecorded and live-streamed videos.
This development follows a proposal by President William Ruto in December 2023, after a successful trial program involving qualified creators in Kenya. The move is part of Meta’s broader strategy to expand monetization opportunities for creators across Africa.
In June 2024, Meta extended Facebook monetization to content creators in Nigeria and Ghana. Other African countries where creators can now earn through ads include Egypt, South Africa, and Rwanda.
Meta’s Impact in Kenya
With at least 52% of Kenyans aged 15 and older using Facebook, this new monetization tool is poised to significantly impact the local digital content ecosystem. This represents 31.96% of social media users on Facebook and 7.56% on Instagram among other platforms.
In February 2022, Meta announced that content creators in 20 sub-Saharan African countries, including South Africa, Seychelles, Senegal, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Kenya, could start creating and earning from Facebook Reels and in-stream ads.
Conclusion
Meta’s new monetization tools for Kenyan content creators mark a significant milestone in the digital content landscape. By providing these opportunities, Meta aims to empower creators to monetize their content effectively, fostering greater creativity and innovation within the digital community.
