Google announced the opening of its cloud data centre in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

The introduction of the Johannesburg cloud region follows similar moves by competitors AWS and Microsoft, who have established their own cloud regions in South Africa. Amazon has a data center campus in Cape Town, while Microsoft operates facilities in both Johannesburg and Cape Town. Oracle, a leading enterprise software company, has also made investments in constructing cloud infrastructure within the country.

Niral Patel, Google Cloud Africa director, stated, “With the inclusion of the Johannesburg region, our network now comprises 40 cloud regions and 121 zones, collectively delivering Google Cloud services to over 200 countries and territories worldwide.” Google has announced plans to organize a launch event in Johannesburg later this year to mark the inauguration of the cloud region.

In September 2022, Google had disclosed its intention to establish cloud interconnect sites, connected to Equiano, in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Lagos, and Nairobi. These interconnect sites aim to provide access to Google’s data center infrastructure in South Africa. The upcoming launch event in Johannesburg will not only celebrate the opening of the cloud region but also serve as a platform to “highlight the transformative potential it offers for businesses across the continent,” according to Google.
