In a landmark move for Zanzibar’s digital future, Airtel Tanzania has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Zanzibar Communication and ICT Infrastructure Agency (ZICTIA) to accelerate the island’s digital transformation.
The agreement, witnessed by senior government officials, establishes a long-term collaboration aimed at expanding telecom services, improving broadband access, and boosting digital inclusion across Zanzibar.
Focus Areas of the Partnership
The collaboration will support key government priorities and fast-track projects in:
- E-Government – improving access to public services through digital platforms.
- E-Learning – enhancing educational opportunities for students across the islands.
- E-Health – enabling better healthcare delivery through technology.
- E-Commerce – supporting local businesses in embracing digital markets.
According to Khalid Salum Mohammed, Zanzibar’s Minister for Infrastructure, Communication, and Transport, the partnership marks a crucial step towards ensuring that all citizens, especially in underserved communities, benefit from modern digital services.
Commitments from Airtel and ZICTIA
Airtel Tanzania’s Managing Director, Charles Kamoto, emphasized that the MoU goes beyond providing telecom services, reflecting Airtel’s commitment to investing in infrastructure and partnerships that empower local communities.
Similarly, ZICTIA’s Director General, Shukuru Awadh Suleiman, highlighted the importance of leveraging private-sector collaborations to unlock the full potential of Zanzibar’s ICT sector. He noted that the partnership will strengthen infrastructure, promote financial inclusion, and position Zanzibar as a hub for innovation and inclusive growth.
