MTN, a prominent African telecommunications provider, is embarking on a groundbreaking initiative to bridge the digital divide in Africa’s remote and underserved communities as said by Techpoint Africa. By partnering with Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite providers, MTN aims to deliver high-speed internet access to regions hampered by limited broadband and fiber infrastructure.

LEO satellites, positioned closer to Earth than conventional satellites, offer reduced latency and enhanced speeds, promising a more reliable and affordable internet solution for rural populations. This strategic move aligns with MTN’s commitment to expanding its network coverage and connecting previously inaccessible areas across the continent.

The company is actively conducting pilot projects in key service areas to assess the feasibility of this technology. Concurrently, South Africa’s regulatory body is establishing licensing and operational frameworks for LEO satellite operators to ensure equitable market access and compliance, particularly for domestic companies.

This ambitious venture follows MTN’s recent pioneering trials of 5.5G technology, marking a continental first. In the wake of financial challenges, including declining revenues in its crucial Nigerian market, MTN appears to be prioritizing innovation as a key driver for recovery and growth.
