The switch-off is now set to commence from June 1, 2025, with the final date for the total shutdown being December 31, 2027. This extension comes after the initial plan to have networks switch off their 2G networks by June 30, 2024, and 3G networks by the end of March 2025.
MTN South Africa expressed agreement with the switch-off but stressed the importance of managing the transition effectively. Telkom noted its minimal investment in 2G technology and progress in migrating voice services to voice-over-LTE, yet highlighted challenges in meeting the 2025 deadline for 3G termination.
Vodacom emphasized the need for further analysis and multi-stakeholder engagement to assess the feasibility of proposed timelines.
