Raxio Group, a leading African data centre company, has inaugurated its first facility in Mozambique, named Raxio MZ1. This initiative is part of the company’s extensive $290 million investment strategy across the continent. Raxio MZ1, Mozambique’s first Tier III Uptime Certified data centre, boasts a capacity of up to 400 racks and 3MW across a 2,000 sqm area.

Strategically situated near three subsea cable landings, including the high-capacity 2Africa cable, Raxio MZ1 offers excellent international connectivity. This positioning ensures an ideal redundant route for the broader Southern African market. The facility enables customers to cross-connect with local and international carriers and other clients in specially designed meet-me rooms, facilitating Internet traffic among local content providers. It aims to attract regional and international service and content providers, enhancing the Internet experience’s speed, resilience, and affordability for all digital users in Mozambique and the region.

Raxio Group, which previously launched data centres in Uganda (2021) and Ethiopia (2023), plans to expand further with new facilities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Côte d’Ivoire, and Angola by the third quarter of 2024.

The data centre industry in Africa is experiencing significant growth. On May 20, 2024, the Republic of the Congo commenced the construction of a three-storey data centre in the Bacongo district of Brazzaville, intended to house the national data centre for storing and processing the Central African country’s digital data. Additionally, PAIX Data Centres, a pan-African provider of carrier and cloud-neutral data centre services, announced an expansion of its Ghana facility to 1.2 MW in response to the continent’s increasing demand for digital infrastructure.

Furthermore, Kenya has secured $1 billion from Microsoft and the UAE’s G42 for a geothermal data centre, and the Nigerian government has unveiled plans to open a 1.4 petabyte data centre by May 29, 2024.
