Following what appears to be a vote of no confidence, OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, has removed its CEO Sam Altman, who has led the company since its start in 2015.

In a statement on Friday, the board said it could no longer have confidence in Altman’s ability to continue leading OpenAI.

“Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities,” the statement read.

Mira Murati, the company’s chief technology officer, will serve as interim CEO, effective immediately, according to the board, while it conducts a formal search for a permanent CEO.

Since her joining OpenAI’s leadership team in the last five years, Murati has played a critical role in OpenAI’s evolution into a global AI leader. As interim CEO, she will bring a unique skill set, an understanding of the company’s values, operations, and business, and experience leading the company’s research, product, and safety functions.

It is unclear what led to the decision to oust Altman as CEO and from the board, but he will be credited for leading the AI company from nothing to $90 billion in value, according to recent reports — and towards an anticipated billion-dollar revenue, thanks to the widespread adoption and popularity of its AI chatbot, ChatGPT.
