Starting August 6, 2024, Medium is expanding its Partner Program eligibility to include writers from over 77 new countries, significantly broadening its reach to include several African nations. This move allows writers in these countries to earn revenue when Medium members engage with their stories.

Newly Included African Countries

The newly included African countries are:

  • Algeria
  • Angola
  • Benin
  • Botswana
  • Côte d’Ivoire
  • Egypt
  • Ethiopia
  • Gabon
  • Gambia
  • Ghana
  • Kenya
  • Madagascar
  • Mauritius
  • Morocco
  • Mozambique
  • Namibia
  • Niger
  • Nigeria
  • Rwanda
  • Senegal
  • South Africa
  • Tanzania
  • Tunisia

Revenue Opportunities and Boost Nomination Program

With this expansion, writers from these countries can now monetize their content based on reader engagement. Additionally, Medium can recruit and pay Boost nominators from these African nations. The Boost Nomination Program highlights top stories for extra visibility, utilizing both internal curators and independent community editors. Nominators receive a flat fee for each selected story.

Eligibility for the Program

To qualify for the Medium Partner Program, writers must:

  • Be Medium members
  • Have published a story in the last six months
  • Have a bank account in an eligible country
  • Be at least 18 years old

Earnings are based on the time members spend reading and listening to stories, as well as engagement signals like claps, highlights, replies, and new follows. Writers can choose to place their stories behind a paywall, making them accessible only to paying Medium members. Payments are processed through Stripe.

How to Get Started

For those not yet Medium members, memberships cost $60–$180 per year or $5–$12 monthly, with a limited-time 20% discount for new members. Writers can start by signing up and following the onboarding process, which includes creating or connecting a Stripe account for payouts.

Onboarding Process:

  1. Click “Continue with onboarding” to start.
  2. Complete the required information to create or connect your Stripe account.
  3. Link your Medium account with an active Stripe account to set up payouts. Check if your country is eligible for Stripe payouts here.
  4. After setting up or connecting to Stripe, provide your taxpayer information to Tipalti, Medium’s third-party payment service.
  5. You will receive email confirmation after submitting your taxpayer information. Note that Tipalti may take up to 5 business days to review and verify your forms.

Medium requires a minimum of $10 in story earnings before sending payouts to your Stripe account. If this amount is not reached in a month, it will roll over to the next month.

Placing Stories Behind the Paywall

Writers can enable monetization for each story by selecting the paywall option during publishing. This will make the story accessible only to Medium members. Engagement from members will generate revenue for the writer.

Conclusion

Global platforms are increasingly enabling content creators in Africa to monetize their work. In June 2024, Meta updated its policy to allow content creators in Nigeria and Ghana to earn ad revenue on Instagram and Facebook, with similar tools rolled out to creators in Kenya in August 2024.

This shift reflects a growing recognition of the rich talent pool in Africa and the demand for diverse voices in the digital space. Medium’s expansion of its Partner Program represents a significant step in providing African writers with new opportunities to monetize their content and reach a global audience.
