The Kenyan government is partnering with TikTok to allow local content creators to access monetization features, aiming to generate meaningful employment for the youth.

This initiative aligns with the government’s response to ongoing youth protests advocating for economic policy changes and cabinet reforms under President William Ruto. By prioritizing digital opportunities, the government seeks to empower young Kenyans economically.

These comments were made during TikTok’s launch of its first-ever Safety Advisory Council for Sub-Saharan Africa, which took place in Nairobi.

It was revealed that discussions with TikTok about introducing monetisation features for Kenyan creators will commence in the coming week, with the goal of reaching a resolution within two to three months. “We hope to announce the monetisation update soon, ideally within the next two to three months,” she said.

This development follows an agreement signed earlier this year between President William Ruto and Meta, allowing Kenyan content creators to start earning from Facebook and Instagram as of June 2024. Ruto praised this initiative, highlighting that it would create new income streams for Kenya’s youth and urged Meta to facilitate monetisation via M-Pesa.

The Kenyan government’s partnership with TikTok underscores its dedication to expanding digital job opportunities and helping young people unlock the financial potential of their online content creation.
